Why We Need to Dump Congress

February 10, 2010

Dump CongressMuch has been said about Congress becoming more accountable to its citizens. Much has been said about citizens needing a mechanism to send a message to Congress.

The fact is, the mechanism exists. It is the polling booth. Each of us has the ability to make our representatives accountable to us. We do it by voting up or down on their jobs by either keeping them in office or sending them home.

We have given them chance after chance and so far we have been rewarded with bigger government, more
spending, higher taxes, lower return for our tax dollar, and an arrogance which is palpable. We have
re-elected members from our districts, saying that “…they’re OK…it’s just those other guys in those other districts
who are betraying our trust”.

The time has come to take back our representation. We can do it with a little extra effort and a firm resolve to
vote out every incumbent in the upcoming election. Think of this as term limits without the legislation. All we
do is vote them all out. That doesn’t mean you have to vote for a Republican if you’re a Democrat or
vice-versa. Just choose any challenger who meets your sensibilities and vote for them.

This website can help spread the word. We will be providing links to local races, showing who the
incumbents are and who the challengers are. We will be a central gathering point for people who agree
that we need to enact our own term limits, by voting them all out…by Dumping Congress now and starting
anew. And if the people we vote in this time aren’t accountable, we can send them packing in the next
election cycle.

We believe that at the federal level, there is no accountability, no desire to really represent the wishes
of constituents. Even at the state level, not so good. At the local level, though, many of us can
directly interact with city councilpeople, county commissioners, school board members. Not so at
higher levels though. So this effort is aimed at federal officeholders.

Do your part. Spread the word about DumpCongressNow.org and support the effort.

Share information about challengers and incumbents. And keep it up. We can do this.

    • Thanks for Visiting us and Spreading the word!

  2. Thank you Dave for putting this together, and it takes someone like yourself to get the ball rolling—–and you are the one to do so. Although I do not always agree with you on the radio, you do provide some interesting insights and thought provoking commentary. I know that deep in your heart, you are a liberal for instance (I know that saying this will get a rise in your BP) and I am a total Conservative clone—but that is OK, I do appreciate all points of view from you,,,,thanks again, Lee

    • Lee,

Truth is, I grew up in a union town, Flint, MI, back in the 50s and 60s. My friends’ parents were either employed by GM or worked for suppliers and subsidiaries. My parents were both Democrats, and that’s where I learned about politics. As you get older, though, things change as you learn more. I realized that by labeling myself I was limiting myself.

I didn’t agree with many of the principles of the Democratic Party, like bigger government, a welfare state, the idea that Government Can Fix Everything. I consider myself to be more libertarian in nature, meaning I support a woman’s right to choose, very limited government, the abolition of the 16th amendment and the adoption of the Fair Tax (http://www.fairtax.org) and more reliance on personal responsibility.

I can’t put a label on myself, because I’m not sure what I’d call it.

I believe that government does indeed have a role: to provide for the GENERAL health and welfare of its citizens, including homeland security.

A system of checks and balances is also necessary as laid out by the founders, and that’s where our movement, DumpCongressNow, comes in. While the original intent was to have the three branches act as checks and balances, there is another necessary method: Voting in and voting out the people who will be responsive to the needs of their constituents. The fastest and most effective way to do this is to send a message that we will not tolerate the self-perpetuating, self-promoting, self-important idealogy that incumbency has become.

The check and balance we can provide is to vote out the lifers, those whose arrogance allow them to ‘skate’ through elections, not meet the needs or discuss the real issues of their constituents. The message we’re sending is: Listen to those you represent or we’ll vote you out. And we’ll keep doing it.

  3. First I would like to say that I like many others enjoy listening to you daily. I never really paid close attention to politics. I was introduced to polictics late in life. I don’t like what is going on in “DC” and yes I agree-All of Congress needs a good cleaning out. There has to be a better solution. You and your other listeners on your show have really got me more involved. Thank you and please keep providing us with important information.
    Regards, O from Naples,FL

  4. Thanks for your comments. I am trying hard to be relevant and entertaining. I can usually get one or the other. But on this issue I am passionate: I want to see the bums thrown out. And no doubt we’ll get a few new bums, but we’ll throw them out too! Keep the faith.

    Dave

  5. Right you are Dave, we need to get some Statesman elected to office to value principles over politics! No more politicians!
